Subject: Some thoughts about creativity

Ages ago, before I got into computing, I used to publish a little rag three
or four times a year. Got some regular readers and some more or less
irregular writers and had a bit of fun, but after a couple of years I got
tired of it and announced that I would cease publication with issue 20,
and that would be the last unless someone was willing to take over. I was
a bit surprised when the most active of the writers did 'volunteer' to take
over the publication, but looked forward to not having to end a series I
was writing prematurely. (I.e. not ending it prematurely, not writing it
that way! ;)) Some time before the changeover he sent me a copy of an early
draft for number 21. I looked it over, scratched my head a bit and told him
it wasn't necessary to make it *that* similar to the original. He had copied
a lot of details in my style, including (I think) a few he didn't even
understand - not because he would have done it that way, but he seemed to
think he had to do it because I had been doing it.
The new editor did eventually turn out a more independent number 21 (one
day I must tell you how close the two issues were to not getting distributed
together as originally planned...) and I went on to other creative pursuits
(pur- not fur-), but now you probably wonder what this has to do with mucks.
Well, I have some times criticised people for being unoriginal when they
immigrate their old Furry characters to a new muck and start rebuilding the
same things they once did there. But it's not just the mortals, and you
can't really blame them for thinking traditionally when they come to a "new"
place and the first thing they see is another park.
No, I'm not suggesting a change here (but I'm trying to get into a new muck
early enough to make a difference there), but I wonder - just like I wondered
about my successor all those years ago - why do muck founders 'always' start
with a park? Do they all have a thing about parks, is it somehow considered
an appropriate setting for the center of the uinverse - or are they just
doing it just because that's how it was once done on Furry?
Well, the park question only has academic interest now as far as FL is
concerned but there seems to be another Furry tradition on its way. When I
returned from a period of forced absence after my modem broke down (What do
you mean you didn't miss me? ;P) I found that we now had a mayor. Okay. What
does a mayor do? Same thing as on Furry, of course! Well, on TFF the
currency never changed, and I found that I for one could live without money
changing in my pocket. So is this changing money thing something we really
want or just something we feel we have to do because etc.?
Maybe we should vote on it... <g>
